DeathSpank is in many ways Guybrush Threepwood turned upside down. It might not be the adventure game some had hoped for, and I think someone might have mentioned they would have liked to see it on PC (it has since been released for the PC, woo!), but in the end this is a really fun game.Ī large part of the charm comes from the titular character. In fact, DeathSpank is something any reader of this site should like. All three good reasons why our own elTee should enjoy it quite a bit. It's a classy game like a psychedelic Fable or a King's Quest on mushrooms. I mean that not in a bourbon-swilling-grandma kind of way, but rather in a subtle and classy Pimm's-sipping-distinguished-uncle manner. We don't encourage anyone to use drugs, but they might alter your perception of this game. There is something decidedly old school about DeathSpank. Sure, he has been involved with plenty of kids games, and there have been contributions to everything from Total Annihilation to Tales of Monkey Island, but his honest-to-god true last game for grown-ups was 1991's LeChuck's Revenge.įast forward to July 2010 - after a year of embarrassments of riches for Mojoers - and we have DeathSpank, Ronzo's RPG/action/adventure hybrid. And you may still find your inventory chocka from time-to-time even if you sacrifice items. It's somewhat odd to think about, but Ron Gilbert's - or "Ronzo" as we affectionally like to refer to him as - last game was actually released almost 20 years ago. You can drop unused and unwanted items or make cash out of them, but there's no way you can collect and carry every single thing you get. You're limited to how many weapons and power-up items you can carry in your inventory. Combat and side quests are quite repetitive There isn't really much of a plot/story Combat is simple to get to grips with, there's a big world to uncover and explore, loads of items, weapons and treasures to collect, loads of side quests to beat, quite a few different and strange enemies to fight, and although I've not really used them, there are plenty of magic spells you can cast. It mixes action, RPG elements/gameplay - such as gaining experience, leveling up and upgrading -, exploration, adventure game puzzle solving and dialogue trees. + The gameplay is fun and at times addictive. The game pokes fun at and references other games and pop culture. There were quite a number of occasions that made me chuckle and laugh out loud. + As mentioned above, the game is very funny all thanks to its ridiculous nature, graphics, sound effects, voice acting, characters and dialogue. A bit of trivia I've found out just, for me at least, is that the guy who voices DeathSpank - Michael Dobson - lent his voice to a character in the English dub for my favourite anime series, Death Note. Some of the character's voices and accents are brilliant. + The music is memorable and catchy, sound effects are great and appropriately wacky and funny sounding, and although a bit grating at first, the voice acting is done over-the-top on purpose for humour. There's a nice blend of 2D and 3D mixed together the backgrounds and scenery look especially appealing and detailed. Although the graphics and animation look amateurish and cheap, like in the cutscenes for example, they add to the game's over-the-top nature and humour. + Colourful, cartoony, and quirky graphics.
